Nora & Clyde

Ring Tailed Lemurs

Nora & Clyde…

  • Lemurs live exclusively in Madagascar in troops of up to 30 lemurs

  • Considered an endangered species

  • Have a matriarchal society

  • 13 black and white alternating stripes on their tails

  • Love to sun bathe in a yoga-like posture

  • Have strong scent glands that they use to communicate with troop members

  • Eat leaves, fruit, flowers, and insects

  • Can live up to 30 years in a zoo, or around 18 years in the wild

Clyde…

  • Clyde arrived in November 2011 from NJ Fish and Wildlife, he was an illegal "pet"

  • He has been alone for 12 years because he is a special needs animal

  • When primates are hand-raised to be sold, instead of mother-raised with a troop of other lemurs, it changes their brain wiring

  • Clyde has never recognized other lemurs as family and has always acted aggressively

  • He loves his keepers but also, out of species confusion, kind of wants to be a bit violently rude and bite them

  • He gets upset by excessive noise and movement (ex: kids running in front of his exhibit)

  • Obsessively marks his territory by rubbing his scent glands on everything and will try to run off guests with a stinkfight

  • Favorite toy is his toddler bicycle

  • Favorite food: monkey biscuits, yogurt, berries

  • He does demand one grape, as a toll payment, from the grocery delivery person on Tuesdays

  • Clyde's life changed for the better on the day Nora arrived

Nora…

  • Arrived in March 2023 from NJ Fish and Wildlife, she was an illegal "pet"

  • After a couple months of introductions, we allowed them to enter the outdoor enclosure together

  • Nora is a super sweet girl and has had a positive effect on Clyde

  • Nora's favorite thing: Clyde

  • Favorite foods: mango, plum, cantaloupe, monkey biscuits
