Mountain Lions

Inigo & Luke…

  • Inigo arrived in November 2015 from Washington State Fish and Wildlife, he was an orphan

  • Luke arrived in November 2016 from California Fish and Wildlife, he was also an orphan

  • Both boys remain playful and kittenish at times, despite being fully grown adults

  • Favorite enrichment items include: piles of straw, large tubes, feathers, pumpkins, and spices

  • They eat about two pounds of meat each, per day

  • Mountain lions are classified as a "small cat", despite being the fourth largest cat in the world (behind the tigers, lions, and jaguars)

  • "Small cats" have the ability to purr, "large cats" do not have the ability to purr

  • Mountain lion sounds include: purrs, chirps, growls, and screams

  • They go by more names than any other animal (catamount, panther, puma, cougar, screamer, and on and on)

  • They live in every ecosystem in the Americas, from mountains to deserts to swamps)

  • They are loners and stalkers, who hunt by ambush and stealth

  • When living alongside humans, they rarely make their presence known

  • They are crepuscular - active at dawn and dusk

  • Can live up to 20 years in a zoo, 10 years in the wild

  • Can leap 18 feet vertically and 25 feet horizontally
